Belarus

My motherland is the republic of Belarus. Its capital is Minsk. My country is situated in the centre of Europe. It is made up of six regions: Brest, Vitebsk, Gomel, Grodno, Minsk and Mogilev. Belarus is not washed by any seas or oceans. Belarus is bordered by five countries. Our country is mostly flat. Belarus is famous for its nature. It is a beautiful country with lots of rivers and lakes. That’s why Belarus is often called a blue-eyed country. There are also a lot of forests and fields in Belarus. Two main languages are spoken in Belarus: Belarusian and Russian. The most known symbols of the republic are a bison, a stork and a cornflower. Belarus is a very traditional country. As for Belarusian holidays I can mention New Year’s Day, Christmas, Easter, Victory Day, Independence Day. If you visit our country you’ll see a lot of different places of interest here: the National Library in Minsk, Brest Fortress, Mir and Nesvizh castles, Lake Naroch and many others. So you won’t be disappointed with our country.

Clothes, fashion

They say “You are what you wear”. I agree with this saying. I think that you should wear not only fashioned but also smart clothes. In different places you need to wear different clothes. For example, at school you should wear formal blouses or shirts and jackets, skirts or trousers. At informal events you can wear comfortable clothes: jeans and T-shirts, for example. Proportion for clothes is also very important. Wearing a big sweater with baggy trousers will make you look very big. You can choose different clothes: denim or linen, leather or cotton, silk or woolen. You can wear striped or checked shirts or T-shirts. But if you want to look fashioned, you should look neat and always have clothes that fit you.

English in my life

Learning a foreign language is very important in every person’s life. I learn English at school and I think it will help me in future. English is an international language today. It has become a world language. English is the most important foreign language among students. Our world today is becoming more and more computerized. And everything connected with computers and computer programmes is in English. So it’s the first advantage. English is an international language today, that’s why a lot of business documents are in English. Mastering a foreign language, especially English, you won’t have any problems with communication abroad, no matter if it is a business or just a holiday trip. So the knowledge of a foreign language is a chance for your prosperous future.

Friendship

I think that friendship is very important in every person’s life. Agreement and good relations between friends make you feel stronger and more confident. If you have a problem, your friend can help you to solve it. You can rely on your friend. You also have a shoulder to cry on. The only thing you should remember is that you should get on very well with your friends and you shouldn’t offend each other. It will help you to be real friends.

Now I’d like to tell you about my best friend. His (her) name is ________________. He (she) is __________. He (she) is very kind, honest and has a good sense of humor. My friend never calls me names and we never fall out. I am happy that we are friends, and I am sure our friendship will last for ever.

Family, helping about the house, about myself

The only thing you should remember is that you should get on very well with your family members and you shouldn’t offend each other.

I think that higher education is very important nowadays, and it will help me in my future life. As for my interests, I like _________________ in my free time. It’s my hobby, and it’s very interesting.

So I have a close-knit family. We are very friendly. I always try to help my mum about the house: do the washing or washing-up, sweep the floor, water the flowers, and sometimes even cook dinner.

So I can say that I love my family very much and I can’t imagine my life without my dearest people.

Future profession

The choice of a future profession is very important in every person’s life. I am a school-leaver this year. I have to study hard because I’m going to enter the University. I think it’s very important to have a good education which will help me to find a good job in future. I have already decided which job I want to have. I’m going to become a ________________ . I think that this profession is very useful. I want to ——————————————————————————————————————————————————————— . And I think that my dream will come true.

Healthy lifestyle

To be healthy you should eat healthy food and go in for sports. I try to eat healthy food which is rich in vitamins. I eat a lot of fruit and vegetables and dairy products and drink fruit juice. I try not to eat fast food which is unhealthy. So I think that everything I eat is healthy and nutritious. Also I go in for sports. I think that sport is very important in every person’s life. It’s very useful for everybody, even if you are not going to become a famous sportsman. Sport is very good for our health. If you do some exercises every day, it will help you to keep fit. There are different kinds of sport: summer and winter, indoor and outdoor, individual and group or team. But whatever kind of sport you go in for, it’s always good. My favourite kind of sport is _________________. I like doing it, and I can’t imagine my life without sport. Also if you want to be healthy you should sleep enough, at least 8-10 hours. So healthy food, sport and good sleep are the most important things for you to be healthy.

Hobby, free time

Free time is a period of time spent out of work and domestic activities. It is the time when you can forget about day-to-day stress and stressful activities and relax. These activities are our hobby. Now I’d like to tell you about my free time and my hobby. I go to school five days a week. So I have only two days off. It’s time when I can have a rest and do the things that I am interested in. in my free time I _______________________. It’s my hobby. _____________________ can really help me to pass my time in a pleasant way. It can be very entertaining. But it’s not only a cure for boredom, it also has a lot of benefits: for example, _________________ can help me to avoid stress. After I have relaxed, it will be easier to deal with problems and find solutions to them. _______________ also enriches my knowledge. I like my hobby very much and I think that it is a great pastime!

In the town and in the village. Types of houses

There are a lot of advantages and disadvantages of living in the country and in the village.

Life in the town offers you a lot of opportunities such as theatres, cinemas, operas and ballets, different clubs and pubs. Living in the town or in the city you can find much more jobs to apply for, you have more opportunities for studying and doing you hobby. There are more opportunities for children to develop their abilities: music schools and art schools, different sport clubs and so on. But many people think that it’s better to live in the country as the air is cleaner because there aren’t any factories and there are fewer cars. You can go for a walk and enjoy the nature. You can go fishing if you want or just swim in the river. You can also go to the forest to gather berries and pick up mushrooms.

There are a lot of different types of houses in the country and in the city: cottage, semi-detached house, terraced house, bungalow, detached house, mansion, maisonette, a flat in a block of flats. All of them have their advantages and disadvantages. Private houses are more spacious, so you have more privacy. Also renting a flat in a city is more expensive. But on the other hand, a flat in a city has more modern conveniences: central heating, hot and cold running water, electricity and so on. So it’s up to every person where to live. The most important thing is that you should like your native town or village and be proud of it.

School

School is very important in every person’s life. Everything we learn here will help us in future. Now I’d like to tell you about my school. It’s a mixed school. So boys and girls study together. A school year is divided into 4 terms. After each term we have vocations. We study 5 days a week. Every day we have different lessons: Maths, English, Russian and Belarusian, Russian and Belarusian literature, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, History, Computing, Geography, PE. Our classes start at 8 o’clock. Each lesson lasts 45 minutes. After each lesson we have a break which lasts 20 minutes. After 5 lessons we go to the school canteen and have lunch. The classes are over at 2 o’clock. After classes we can go home or stay at school for optional (extra) classes.

So the role of school and all the subjects we learn is great. And we can’t get without schools.

Great Britain

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is situated on the British Isles. It is made up of four countries: England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. They are not independent countries but ‘countries in a country’. The capital is London. The nature is very varied: mountains and hills, valleys and plains, moorlands and grasslands, rivers and lakes, forests and islands and the sea. Everywhere in the UK English is the official and common language. But each country of the UK has its own language. The UK is a Kingdom. The head of the country is the Queen Elizabeth the second. Great Britain is very traditional country. As for British holidays I can mention Halloween, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Easter and so on. As for British sights I can mention London Eye, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Big Beg, London Bridge, Stonehenge. I think it will be very interesting to visit this country.

Travelling

Some people travel for business, some do it just for pleasure. There are a lot of different means of travelling: by car, by bus, by train, by plane, by boat or ship, on foot. Every means has its advantages and disadvantages. Travelling by plane, for example, is the fastest but at the same time the most expensive one. When you travel by bus or by train, you’ll save some money but spend a lot of time. Travelling by boat or ship is very interesting I think but a lot of people may be seasick. Travelling on foot is very hard as it needs a lot of physical strength. For me travelling by car is the most enjoyable and comfortable kind of travelling. You can go where you want, you can stop at any place and spend as much time as you need at this or that place. Nobody will bother you and you won’t bother anyone. Travelling will be more enjoyable if you travel with your friends. As for me I like travelling very much and I can’t imagine my life without it.

Working day

I’d like to tell you about my working day. I go to school five days a week. So I get up at half past six in the morning. I take a shower, wash my face and brush my teeth. Then I make my bed a do my morning exercise. After that I have my breakfast and go to school. Our classes start at 8 o’clock. Usually I have 5 or 6 lessons every day: Maths, English, Russian and Belarusian, Russian and Belarusian literature, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, History, Computing, Geography, PE. Each lesson lasts 45 minutes. After each lesson we have a break which lasts 20 minutes. After 5 lessons we go to the school canteen and have lunch. The classes are over at 2 o’clock. After classes we can stay at school for optional (extra) classes or go home. When I come home I have a little rest and do my homework for the next day. It usually takes me 2 or 3 hours. After that I have dinner, watch TV or just talk with my parents about my working day. At 10 o’clock I go to bed and have a sleep. So it’s my usual working day.

Shopping. Money

Shopping is very important in every person’s life. I don’t think it’s a waste of time. I think shopping is a necessity. There are different kinds of shop; supermarket, book shop, bakery, pet shop, sweet shop, newsagent’s toy shop, chemist’s, department store. For example, you can buy some medicine at chemist’s or bread at bakery. I often make a shopping list when I go shopping. Sometimes I just go window-shopping. I can’t say that I’m a shopaholic. I don’t buy very expensive clothes. So I don’t waste a lot of money on it. But I like smart and fashioned clothes. I prefer to buy clothes myself, but very often my mum buys something for me. But if you want to buy something you have to pay for it. At first people bartered, which means they exchange things they had for things they needed. But today people use money. Every country has its own currency: euros in Europe, pounds in GB, Belarusian rubles in Belarus. Many countries have both coins and banknotes, but in Belarus we have only banknotes. If you travel to other countries you need to convert your money into the local currency. For that an exchange rate is used. So I can say that shopping is a kind of hobby for me, and I can’t get without it.

Weather and climate

Climate is the average temperature, pressure, precipitation and humidity in a certain place. Weather describes the condition of the atmosphere. It may be sunny, hot, cold, raining, etc. now I’d like to tell you about climate and weather in Belarus. Belarus has a temperate-continental climate with hot summers, cold winters and very distinct seasons. The annual average temperature is about 7 C. Belarus winters are very cold. Winter average temperatures are -4 — -10 degrees Celsius. It can be very windy. There can be snowfalls, sometimes heavy. However, in some years the winters are mild. Belarus weather in spring and autumn is usually cool but above zero. May in spring and September in autumn are generally pleasant with warm days. In summer Belarus usually has very nice, sunny and mild weather. Average temperatures are +16 — +25 C. thunderstorms are quite common. Summer is sunny and dry most of the time and a very good season for visiting the country.

Ecological problems

People’s activities today have made a huge impact on the environment. They pollute the world we live in. nowadays there are a lot of ecological problems such as deforestation, global warming and greenhouse effect, acid rain, recourse depletion, different kinds of pollution (water, air and even noise pollution). As a result a lot of species of plants and animals become extinct.

As the worlds population continues to grow, there will be more people who need food and energy. It will lead to increasing emissions of greenhouse gases. If the climate change enough, the plants and animals could no longer survive. Acid rain and deforestation are major contributors to climate change too. Today people also worry about the threat of nuclear power. Chernobyl disaster in 1986 has badly affected Belarus. As a result many districts became dangerous to live in.

But nowadays there are different organizations and parties that work to protect the nature. Everybody personally should protect the water, the air and the land from pollution.

Native town

Your home is a place where you were born and where your parents and friend live. It’s your native town or village. Wherever you go, you’ll always miss your native place. Sometimes there area lot of things to do abroad, there are a lot of interesting places to visit and good opportunities to live and work. But you feel homesick and not in your plate. But when you come back home, everything is different. You feel that everything is OK: your relatives and friends are with you, and you can ask them for help or advice.

And now I’d like to tell you about my native town. It’s Khoiniki. It was founded in 1512. Khoiniki is rather small. The population is about 12 thousand people. There are four schools and one college in our town. You can also see a church, a hospital, a museum in the park, a cinema, 2post-offices, a library, banks, different shops and a supermarket. Despite the fact that Khoiniki is a small town, it’s very beautiful, and I’m happy I live here.

Art (films, books, music, cinema, theatre)

Art is very important in every person’s life. We can get some useful information or even knowledge with the help of art. It is also a means of entertaining. There are different forms of art: painting, graffiti or street art, sculpture, films, books, music, cinema, theatre. Art is more than just beauty. Art must create an emotional link between artist and viewer. It helps to communicate the feelings of artists. Not everyone can understand art. But I can say that I am not one of them. I like going to the cinema or to the museum where I can enjoy paintings by famous artists, among which I can mention Mark Chagall, Kazimir Malevich, Ilya Repin, Ivan Aivazovsky, Ivan Shishkin. I also like watching TV, reading books and listeningto music. My favourite writer is ________________ . I like reading his books very much. As for my favourite film, it’s _________________ . so I can say that art is a kind of hobby for me and I can’t live without it.

Mass Media

Mass media is the source the information comes from. We can get it from television, radio or newspapers. 60 per cent of the population in Britain gets information from TV. The most popular TV and radio organization in Britain is BBC. BBC news programmes are good because it is not a commercial company. As for British newspapers there are 2 types of them: popular or “yellow press” and quality on serious issues. As for Belarusian mass media, a lot of people prefer watching TV most of all. But they also read newspapers and listen to the radio. Censorship of the media and television goes on in all countries. Most people think that everything they read in newspapers, hear on the radio or watch on TV is true, but very often mass media gives people another sense of reality. As for me I get all the information from TV. But sometimes I can listen to the radio or even read a newspaper.

Appearance and character. National character

Appearance is the way you look, for example, young, beautiful, tall or short. Character is what kind of person you are, for example, kind, friendly, polite. There are some stereotypes of different nations and their traits of character. If you hear the word “an Englishman”, you have some associations with it. It is believed that British people are conservative. But in reality they are not as conservative as they are thought to be. Typical British people are tea lovers. What is more they drink tea with milk and at the exact time. There is also a stereotype that the British sense of humour is very specific. The other stereotype is that the British youth are believed to be clubbing lovers. British people are also believed to communicate a little. In reality they are talkative and very friendly. As for Belarusian people they are thought to be open and cheerful, warm-hearted, fun-loving, intelligent, welcoming, peaceful and very hospitable. Compared to the people in many western countries Belarusians are not materialistic. One thing that always impresses foreign visitors to Belarus is the strong sense of community. There is a high respect for education and culture. Most houses have a large number of books. Even though Belarus has become industrialized, the countryside holds a special place in the hearts of Belarusians. Belarusians also have a good sense of humour.

So every nation has stereotypical positive features and negative ones. Many stereotypes are wrong, but some of them seem to be true.

Holidays in Belarus & Great Britain

Both Belarus and Britain are very traditional countries. There are a lot of holidays that people celebrate. And I’d like to tell you about some of them. In Belarus people celebrate New Year’s Day, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, April Fool’s Day, Easter, May Day, Victory Day, Independence Day and many others. In GB people celebrate Christmas, New Year’s Day, Valentine’s Day, April Fool’s Day, Easter, Victory Day, Halloween and so on. People celebrate New Year on the1st of January. They decorate a New Year tree with ornaments, lights and tinsel. Ded Moroz put presents under a New Year tree for children to find them. We celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January, people invite their friends and relatives, give and get presents send and get cards and have fun at New Year and Christmas. In Britain people celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December. They sing carols, decorate a Christmas tree, pull crackers. Santa Claus put presents into stockings which are usually on the fireplace. Both in Belarus and in Britain people celebrate Valentine’s Day on the 14thofFebruary. It’s a day of romantic love. People send Valentine cards to each other to show their love. But in Britain people don’t write their names on Valentine cards. So nobody knows who they are from. As for April fool’s Day, people in Britain and in Belarus celebrate it on the 1st of April. They play jokes on each other. In Britain people can play jokes only before noon. If they do it after noon, they become April Fools. Easter is a holiday which is celebrated in spring. People in Belarus and in GB pain eggs and give them as presents to each other. In Belarus people celebrate victory day on the 9th of May and Independence Day on the 3rd of July. On these holidays they decorate streets with flags and balloons. You can see a great parade and fireworks. On Victory Day people congratulate veterans and give them presents. In Britain people celebrate Halloween on the 31st of October. The main thing on this day is a pumpkin. So there area lot of holidays which are celebrated in Belarus and Great Britain, and I can’t imagine our life without them.

Science and technology. Modern communication

Fire was the first discovery and wheel was the first invention. Since that time we have travelled far. Half of our present day inventions were unthinkable a century ago. Today we have access to some of the most advanced technical inventions. We have come into digital age, the age of mobile phones, computers and Internet. When we think about modern means of communication we can’t understand how people lived without them earlier. They made the distance between people unimportant. Emails have replaced letters and postcards. With the help of mobile phones you can communicate with your friends or relatives, or just entertain yourself. Radio and TV are also modern means of communication which made our life more interesting and entertaining. We can also get useful information and even knowledge from TV or radio. As for modern technologies, I can mention cloning which is making a genetic copy of something, or using robots, for example. So the importance of all scientific inventions and modern means of communication is unquestionable today, but everything should be done within reasonable limits.

Youth and society. Youth organizations

Today young people take an active part in the social life of the country. There are a lot of different youth organizations. As for Britain, I can mention such organization as Youth Parliament. It gives young people the chance to have their say on any issue which affect them and be listened by local and national government. Any young person aged 11-18 can stand or vote. If you want to become a member of UK Youth Parliament you should write a manifesto about what you want to improve in your local area. As for Belarusian youth organization I can name Belarusian Republican Youth Union. It was founded 0n 6 September 2002. Among its activities I can mention camping, sporting events and visiting memorials, concerts and competitions, charity and volunteering. Also young people both in Belarus and Great Britain take an active part in cheerleading. As for me I am not a member of a youth organization now, but I’d like to become it, and I am sure I will.

National cuisine (Belarus, GB). Food

I’d like to tell you some words about meals in Belarus and Great Britain. The first meal of the day is breakfast. Some British people eat toast with butter and jam. Others eat a bowl of cereal with milk or porridge. Some people eat bacon and eggs and drink tea with milk or coffee. In Belarus people usually eat sandwiches and drink tea or coffee.

Lunch is the meal eaten in the middle of the day. Both in Belarus and in Britain people eat soup, potatoes with meat or fish, pasta or vegetables. Drinks at lunch time are very different: juices, mineral water, coca-cola, tea or coffee.

Dinner is the meal eaten in the evening. It is a cooked meal of meat or fish and vegetables, one of which is often potato. It is common to eat desserts after the main dish.

As for British national cuisine, the most popular dishes are Yorkshire pudding and shepherd’s pie. Yorkshire pudding is made from flour, eggs and milk and traditionally served with roast beef. A shepherd’s pie is made with mutton or beef, vegetables and mashed potatoes on the top. There is a tradition in Britain to drink tea with milk.

National Belarusian dishes are Mochanka (sauce for draniki or blini), draniki which are made from potatoes, blini and many others.

So every country has its national cuisine, and I think it is very interesting to try these or those national dishes.

International Relationships. At home and abroad

There are a lot of international events which are held in Belarus. The most famous are Belarus Fashion Week and Slavyansky Bazaar in Vitebsk. Belarus Fashion Week is an international event aimed at popularization of designer clothes in Belarus. Most participants of BFW are local designers who are successful and well-known all over the world. A lot of foreign designers are also invited to Belarus to demonstrate the international character of fashion. Another popular international event is Slavyansky Bazaar in Vitebsk. The first festival was staged on 18 July 1992. Representatives of all Slavonic nations join together on one stage. Slavyansky Bazaar in Vitebsk helps to promote culture and arts. Also every year Belarus takes part in Eurovision and Children Eurovision. So Europeans know a lot about Belarus, and our outstanding people are known worldwide.

Outstanding people (Belarus, Great Britain)

Belarus gave birth to many famous people whose names are known all over the world. Among them you can find the names of politicians and public figures, scientists, heroes of war and labour, sportsmen and artists. The names of Euphrosyne Polotskaya, Kirill Turovsky and Francysk Skaryna are known all over the world for their contribution in the development in printing. Belarusian literature has made a great contribution to world literature. I’d like to mention the names of such Belarusian writers as Yanka Kupala, Yakub Kolas, maim Bagdanovich, Kandrat Krapiva, Vladimir Korotkevich, Vasil Bykov, Maxim Tank and many others. As for Belarusian artists, I can mention K. Malevich, M. Shagal, Ya. Drosdovich. Many names in the history of Belarus of the 20th century are connected with two main events, the Great Patriotic War and space exploration. We are proud of the heroes of the last war K. Zaslonov, E. Osipova, M. Gastello, V. Talalikhin. In the family of cosmonauts there are also two Belarusians, A. Kovalyonok and P. Klimuk.

As for British outstanding people, I can mention mother Teresa who was famous for looking after poor children in India. I can also mention such writers as William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, Joseph Rudyard Kipling and such scientist as Isaak Newton whose first discovery was the law of gravitation.

In the list of outstanding people of Belarus and Great Britain are also Nobel winners, historical, public and cultural figures who are known all over the world.

Natural disasters

There are a lot of natural disasters that happen in different countries all over the world: avalanche, blizzard, drought, earthquake, volcano eruption, flood, hurricane, heatwave, storm, thunderstorm, tornado, tsunami, wildfire. Now I’d like to tell you about weather extremes in Belarus. In 2009 there was a flood in Minsk when at the same time in some parts of Belarus it was very hot. The water was everywhere; in the metro, on the roads, in the buildings, on transport. The shower disrupted traffic and normal life. Streets in Minsk were flooded. So all the disasters cause big damage, and it takes a lot of money and time to repair the damage.

School traditions

School is very important in every person’s life. Everything we learn here will help us in future. Now I’d like to tell you about my school and school traditions. It’s a mixed school. So boys and girls study together. A school year is divided into 4 terms. After each term we have vocations. We study 5 days a week. On Saturdays we usually have different events or holidays. The first school holiday is the 1st of September, the beginning of anew school year. We listen to the headmaster’s official message, welcoming speeches of our teachers, schoolmates and parents and have a concert. Then we have our first lesson. Another holiday that we celebrate is Teacher’s Day. We always congratulate our teachers. We also celebrate New Year’s Day and Women’s Day. In February Reunion Day is held when school leavers come to school and meet each other. What is more, School Olympiads are held in our school every year and students have competitions in all school subjects. There is one more great event – the end of a school year.

So I can say that school traditions support friendship between students. Their role is great, and we can’t get without them.

Types of houses

There are a lot of different types of houses in the country and in the city: detached house which stands alone and not joined to another house, semi-detached house, that is a pair of houses that share one common wall, terraced house (a row of identical looking houses that share side walls), cottage, bungalow, mansion, maisonette, a flat in a block of flats which is a part of a large building. The most important thing is that you should like your place and be proud of it.

Holidays in Belarus

Belarus is a very traditional country. There are a lot of holidays that people celebrate and customs and traditions that people follow. And I’d like to tell you about some of them. In Belarus people celebrate New Year’s Day, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, April Fool’s Day, Easter, May Day, Victory Day, Independence Day, Kupalye and many others. People celebrate New Year on the1st of January. They decorate a New Year tree with ornaments, lights and tinsel. Ded Moroz put presents under a New Year tree for children to find them. And this is our tradition. We celebrate Christmas on the 7th of January, people invite their friends and relatives, give and get presents send and get cards and have fun at New Year and Christmas. In Belarus people celebrate Valentine’s Day on the 14th of February. It’s a day of romantic love. People send Valentine cards to each other to show their love. As for April fool’s Day, people in Belarus celebrate it on the 1st of April. They play jokes on each other. Easter is a holiday which is celebrated in spring. People in Belarus paint eggs and give them as presents to each other. In Belarus people celebrate Victory Day on the 9th of May and Independence Day on the 3rd of July. On these holidays they decorate streets with flags and balloons. You can see a great parade and fireworks. On Victory Day people congratulate veterans and give them presents. So there area lot of holidays which are celebrated in Belarus, and I can’t imagine our life without them.

Holidays in Great Britain

Great Britain is a very traditional country. There are a lot of holidays that people celebrate and customs and traditions that people follow. And I’d like to tell you about some of them. In GB people celebrate Christmas, New Year’s Day, Valentine’s Day, April Fool’s Day, Easter, Victory Day, Halloween and so on. In Britain people celebrate Christmas on the 25th of December. They sing carols, decorate a Christmas tree, pull crackers. Santa Claus put presents into stockings which are usually on the fireplace. Ant this is one of British traditions. People celebrate New Year on the 1st of January. In Britain people celebrate Valentine’s Day on the 14th of February. It’s a day of romantic love. People send Valentine cards to each other to show their love. But there is a tradition in Britain that people don’t write their names on Valentine cards. So nobody knows who they are from. In Britain people celebrate Halloween on the 31st of October. The main thing on this day is a pumpkin. There are also some holidays which are celebrated only in GB. Gay Fawkes Night and Pancake races are among them. So there area lot of holidays which are celebrated Great Britain and British people can’t imagine their life without them.

Education

Education is very important in every person’s life. Everything we learn here will help us in future. Now I’d like to tell you about Education in Belarus. Preschool education is not compulsory in Belarus but about 70 % of children attend kindergarten before they start school.

Most children in Belarus start school at the age of 6. At the age of 15, pupils that have completed basic education can stay at school until they finish their high school education at 17, or attend college or professional technical institutions. Most schools in Belarus are mixed. So boys and girls study together. A school year is divided into 4 terms. After each term pupils have vocations. We study 5 days a week. Every day we have different lessons: Maths, English, Russian and Belarusian, Russian and Belarusian literature, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, History, Computing, Geography, PE. After classes students can go home or stay at school for optional (extra) classes.

Another stage of education is higher education at Universities which is very prestigious. Universities in Belarus are of two types: private or state operated. While studying, students get scholarship.

So the role of education in Belarus is great. And we can’t get it.

Family traditions

I think that family is very important in every person’s life. Agreement and good relations in a family make you feel stronger and more confident. If you have a problem, your family can help you to solve it. You can always rely on your family members. You also have a shoulder to cry on. The only thing you should remember is that you should get on very well with your family members and you shouldn’t offend each other.

Now I’d like to tell you about my family and our family traditions. I think my family is small / big. There are ____ people in my family: ______________________________________________________________ and me. My mother’s name is _______________________. She is a ___________________. My father’s name is ___________________. He is a __________________. And now I’d like to tell you some words about myself. My name is __________________. I am _____. I’m 11th form pupil. So I am a school leaver this year. I have to study hard because I’m going to enter the University.

We try to do everything together. And this is our most important family tradition.

So I can say that I love my family very much and I can’t imagine my life without my dearest people.

National cuisine (Belarus). Food

I’d like to tell you some words about meals in Belarus. The first meal of the day is breakfast. In Belarus people usually eat sandwiches and drink tea or coffee. Some Belarusian people eat a bowl of cereal with milk or porridge.

Lunch is the meal eaten in the middle of the day. In Belarus people eat soup, potatoes with meat or fish, pasta or vegetables. Drinks at lunch time are very different: juices, mineral water, coca-cola, tea or coffee.

Dinner is the meal eaten in the evening. It is a cooked meal of meat or fish and vegetables, one of which is often potato. It is common to eat desserts after the main dish.

National Belarusian dishes are Mochanka (sauce for draniki or blini), draniki which are made from potatoes, blini and many others.

So every country has its national cuisine, and I think it is very interesting to try these or those national dishes.

National cuisine (GB). Food

I’d like to tell you some words about meals in Great Britain. The first meal of the day is breakfast. Some British people eat toast with butter and jam. Others eat a bowl of cereal with milk or porridge. Some people eat bacon and eggs and drink tea with milk or coffee.

So every country has its national cuisine, and I think it is very interesting to try these or those national dishes.

Sport

To be healthy you should eat healthy food and go in for sports. I go in for sports. So sport is one of the most important things for you to be healthy.
